A love note to NYC

NY, I was not ready for you

I think no one is really ready for you

You are an intimidating concrete jungle

And before you come into our lives, we are helpless babies

Nobody comes to NYC; it is NYC that comes into our lives

It invades our bodies with dazzling lights of opportunities

We

paralyze

Wait

Breath

I should have never left home

We are grown-ups

on the outside, only

Inside, we feel tiny,

looking up with a pacifier in the mouth

dizzy with the rush of your streets

But you got tiny, NYC

Your buildings are still here, looking upon us

But you, you got small

Waiting for an answer

You, who knows it all, were waiting for us

to take care of your empty streets

How did it feel, NYC, to feel small for a short time?

New Yorkers took care of you,

we’ve struggled to make you proud again

And so you are

Proud of us

Proud of your people from all over the world

Proud that you taught us well

You are standing up to be a giant again

Above all, you are proud because you always knew that your greatness is on us

And we didn’t let you down

That’s how we say: we heart you, NYC

Marcela Bonancio, responsible for the project “Love Notes To NYC,” invited me to write a note to the struggling city during the covid-19 pandemic.

I wrote this poem proud of the city that overcomes major hard times with powerful greatness.

A book with the best notes and poems will be released before the holidays of 2020, and all proceeds from the sale will benefit covid-19 relief funds.
